Auto-DM to new Instagram followers: who can actually do it
Yes, the feature exists. Meta built it and launched it with Manychat on 22 October 2025. But it is still a closed beta, most accounts are not let in, and Meta caps it at one message per person per week. Here is who qualifies, and what to run if you do not.
A few days ago a creator messaged us on Instagram. She had been reading our website and she asked a very simple question: can we send an automatic DM to new followers? She could not find the details anywhere.
Answering her properly took us somewhere uncomfortable, and we will get to that. But first, the thing you came here for.
The short answer
Auto-DM on follow is real. Meta built the trigger and launched it with Manychat on 22 October 2025, announced from Austin, Texas. It is Meta-approved. It is not a grey-market hack.
It is also a closed beta. Meta has never published a follow event in its public Instagram Platform webhook documentation, which is the list every other developer builds from. Manychat was the exclusive launch partner, and more than nine months later that is still where the feature lives.
And even inside Manychat, you do not decide whether you get it. Meta does, account by account.
So for most people reading this, the practical answer is: not on your account, not today, and nobody can tell you when.
Three gates sit between a follow and a DM
Gate 1 — your tool has to be in the beta
This is not something a tool can choose. The follow event is not in the public API, so there is nothing for other developers to connect to. If a tool is not Manychat and it promises DMs on follow, it is not using Meta's trigger, because there is no public trigger to use.
Gate 2 — Meta has to approve your specific account
This is where most people are stopped, and Manychat says so on its own page: if you have less than 1,000 followers or do not have significant engagement on your account, you are likely ineligible for the Follow to DM beta.
Their support team tells people the same thing in different words — it is a Meta-side limitation, it is not caused by anything you did, and they cannot lift it. On Manychat's own community forum one user offered $1,000 to anyone who could get the feature working on their account. The replies are mostly other people saying they have the same problem.
Paying for a higher plan does not help. Eligibility is granted by Meta, not by your subscription, and Manychat states that general availability is not guaranteed.
Gate 3 — one message per person, per week
This is the limit almost nobody mentions, and it is the one that quietly eats your results. Meta allows a person to receive one follow-DM per week in total, across every account using the feature. If someone follows you on Tuesday and followed another automated account on Monday, only that first account gets to message them. Yours does not send, and you are not told why.
On top of that it fires only once per follower ever, and only for followers who have not been in your DMs before. A fan who unfollows and follows again gets nothing.

The part where we got this wrong
Here is the uncomfortable bit. Until this week our own landing page said IGSender would automatically send a warm welcome DM to every new follower. Our comparison pages listed it as a feature we had and our competitors did not.
None of it was true. It was written in May 2026 during a redesign, taken from a list of features we wanted to build, and nobody checked it against the product. The reality is that IGSender has four triggers — comment, story reply, live comment and DM keyword — and a follow has never been one of them.
That copy is exactly how the creator who messaged us found us. She read a promise and asked a fair question about it. We have removed the claim from every page it appeared on: the landing page, seven comparison pages, this blog and the structured data the search engines read.
We are leaving this section in rather than quietly deleting the copy, because if you are choosing between DM tools, the useful thing to know is which ones will tell you what they cannot do.
What to run instead: the follow gate
There is a way to get the same outcome — a new follower and an open conversation — that works on every account today. You just run it in the other order. Instead of DMing people after they follow, you make the follow the price of the thing they already want.
It works because of how Instagram's rules are built. A business can only message someone after that person makes the first move: a comment, a story reply, a DM. A follow is not a first move, which is the whole reason the follow trigger needed a special beta. But a comment is. So you let them come to you.
Why this often beats the follow trigger
- •It works on your account today. No eligibility, no waiting list, no beta.
- •The person has actually asked you for something, so they are far warmer than someone who tapped follow while scrolling.
- •There is no weekly cap, and no silent failures when they followed someone else that week.
- •Their comment opens Instagram's 24-hour messaging window properly, so the rest of your sequence can run.
- •You still get the follow. It is simply the price of the link rather than a hope.
How to set it up
- •Pick one thing worth following for — a guide, a template, a discount code, an early-access list. Vague offers do not convert.
- •Choose a keyword people can actually spell. One word, no punctuation. GUIDE beats Send Me The Guide.
- •Turn the follow gate on so the link is held back until they follow.
- •Write the gate message like a person: say what they are getting, say the follow unlocks it, and leave the button to do the work.
- •Put the keyword in the caption and pin it as the first comment, so people who read neither still see it.
One detail that saves annoyance: check whether they already follow you before you ask. Being asked to follow an account you have followed for two years is the fastest way to look like a bot. IGSender checks first and skips the gate for existing followers.
What about tools that promise it anyway?
If a tool that is not Manychat says it will DM your new followers, ask one question: through which API? Meta has not published one. What is left is browser automation — software that logs into your account and clicks around pretending to be you.
That is the category Instagram's terms describe as unauthorised access, and it is the category that gets accounts restricted, shadow-limited or removed. A welcome message is not worth an account you spent years building.
Questions people ask
Can Instagram send automatic DMs to new followers?
Yes, but only through Meta's Follow to DM beta, which launched with Manychat on 22 October 2025 and is the only place it exists. Meta grants access account by account, and accounts under roughly 1,000 followers are usually not eligible. Everyone else has to use an engagement trigger such as comment-to-DM instead.
Why is my Manychat Follow to DM not working?
Usually one of three reasons. Meta has not granted your account beta access. Or the person already received a follow-DM from some other account that week, since Meta allows only one per person per week. Or they have been in your DMs before, because the trigger fires only once per follower and only for people who have not messaged you.
Can IGSender auto-DM new followers?
No. IGSender triggers on comments, story replies, live comments and DM keywords, and Meta's follow event is not available outside its beta. What IGSender does have is a follow gate, which holds your link back until the person follows you, so a request for your link becomes a follower.
What is the best alternative to follow-to-DM?
Comment-to-DM with a follow gate. You post an offer with a keyword, the person comments it, and the link unlocks once they follow. It works on any Business or Creator account today, it has no weekly cap, and the person has shown real intent rather than a passing tap.
